5 Tips To Improve Family Portaits!
By JENNIFER WHEATLEY

Tip 1:

Avoid awkward facial expressions. There is nothing worse than a posed photo and even worse if you keep your subject posing for too long they begin to look strained. Ask your subject to look away and when you are ready to shoot to turn back to you. You’ll get a far more natural look. And if they get the giggles, keep shooting, your bound to get a one good.

Tip 2:

Stand further away and zoom all the way in to your subject. This blurs the background and makes the person in the photo stand out.  You can also sneak a few natural photos when they are not looking.

Tip 3:

Framing correctly by filling the entire frame with the subject. No one is interested in your granny’s lounge so don’t leave a lot of space around the person you are shooting. If the surrounding area is worth including, place the person in either the left or right third of the frame, not dead centre!

Tip 4:

When shooting outdoors during the day, don’t make your subject face the sun. All you’ll get is frowns and squinty eyes (or worse sunglasses)! Place the sun behind or to the side and pop up your flash. The flash will light their faces and the sun will give a beautiful backlight.

Tip 5:

Most people tend to turn their heads slightly back causing the camera to look up their nose, NOT ATTRACTIVE!  Ask them to put their chin down and look up at the camera with their eyes only. This also makes most faces look slimmer even though many worry about a double chin but in actual fact the chin hides the neck.
