Preparing your private pamper boutique, while cleaning out the closet...

Now for all of you who watched Sex and the City the movie, I am sure will agree with me when I say that Carey’s closet is a must have “style item”! Which got me thinking.. why do we neglect our storage space as much as we do. This is a common problem that all of our homes face. What better way to prepare for Spring and Sunshine with a bit of good old fashioned “cleaning out the closet”.

Where to start your re-organisation project:
Begin by taking a few digital photos of the areas that need sorting. This could be your cupboards or work/home office. Now take these photos and look carefully at them, you will see the space in a whole new light.
Write down a wish list of what your storage needs are, this should include everything from the number of shoes that need organizing to the amount of sweaters that have not seen the light of day for years due to the “chaos factor”. Once you have completed your first list, it’s time to write a list of what you own and how you use it.

Throughout the seasons we only ever use a fraction of our clothes. Preparing for what storage you actually need, may include making some tough choices on what stays and what goes.

Let the purge begin!
Be brutal, anything that you have not worn for 3 years needs to get the boot. You may even find the odd treasure you have not seen for a few years! Collect all your purged items into a plastic container and give them to a local shelter. It’s cold out there, and so many people needing clothes. It’s a good thing to do!

On a budget? Why not take a trip down to your local Hardware Store. They have wonderful DIY options that are fabulous and affordable. For a bit of glam, plaint the interior of your cupboards in one of our seasons hot new colour's, and change those door handles! Something crystal perhaps..?

So what does make for good storage space? As in all the spaces in your home, I believe that it should reflect your overall style and personality. After all these cupboard are essentially a haven to all your hidden treasures and possessions.

Gone are the days where your cupboard space is pokey and dark. This area should be treated as a room in itself, and given the appropriate attention!

Always allow for around 10-15% of your floor area for storage when planning your room. Work out what clothes you have most of and go from there. A mixture of draws, shelves and hanging space helps to keep everything organized, and don’t forget that all important shoe storage plan.

Draw out your storage space on grid paper. Each block representing 200mm. Take into account all plug points and fixtures, such as doors, lights and awkward angels.

It’s always easier to change a plan on paper than once it has been installed. Planning is key!

Style Tip

  • Do not hide away all your belongings. Use a selection of your favorite items to create art out of the ordinary.
  • Clear Perspex storage works well in small spaces.
  • Hanging box shelves is one of the most versatile storage and display solutions. Try flip them at a 45 degree angle for something a bit different.
  • Should you have the space be fabulous by fitting a selection of wall panels to create a “private pamper boutique”. Now that’s what I call big city style!

Group all your hanging garments into long, medium and short to establish the length of hanging rail you require. The number of folded sweaters and T-shirts will give you an idea of what sort of shelving space you need installed. Count your shoes, and always allow some extra shoe space! Get creative with your shelving for shoes, create a focal point within your cupboard which will allow for easy access and a design feature. Should you be short on shelving space for shoes, invest in some luxurious shoe bags. Sure to keep you  Christian Lacroix safe and in mint condition.

Consider how your smalls, socks and underwear will be stored. Zone your personal spaces, separating it into his and hers. Men generally need more shelving and women more rail space. Many a relationship could have been saved if there were organization and storage for both parties..! Always consider next season and that you will be needing more clothes. Try and ensure that you are purging at least once a year and that any storage you install can grow with your lifestyle and family.

So the focal point is….?
And remember always ensure you have included a flattering light and a fabulous mirror in your design plan.
