Projects:
The projects create the working platform for achieving the aims of Umcebo. Projects can be divided into the following main areas:

Creative production-based workshops
The outcomes of these workshops are saleable products, generating income, informal learning and skills transfer. Local communities are encouraged to connect with Umcebo by bringing their old beads; wool other donated recyclable materials.

Commissioned art pieces:

Unique and individual banners / tapestries, sculptures, garments, jewellery, accessories, lighting, décor, or specially commissioned projects.

Banners / Tapestries
:
Large and smaller scale cloth wall hangings. Jewelled and embellished with wirework, intricately applied beadwork combining found and recycled objects, sewing, embroidery and other painting and cladding techniques. Imagery and patterning is individual to each banner. The final effect is one of a colourful, embroidered and sculptural mosaic-like wall hanging.

Sculptures
:
Large, freestanding pieces of sculpture, involving structural wirework, sewing techniques and other sculptural and painting techniques. The patterned cladding is achieved through using many of the above-mentioned banner techniques. Subject matter, imagery and patterning will also be unique to each sculpture.

Decor Items and Commissions:
A line of products consisting of functional and one-of-a-kind home-décor items and accessory pieces. The line consists of beaded and wirework pieces (necklaces, sculptures, chandeliers etc... ) and bags, mats, basket and vessels woven and crocheted from reclaimed plastics. This line is constantly developing.

Mosaics:
In collaboration with DIT students and other community artists, crafters produce a number of high quality and uniquely designed mosaic panels which speak of the lives and experiences of our members.

Chandeliers:

In collaboration with tertiary institutions and other artists and crafters, we are producing on ongoing range of chandeliers made from recycled and donated materials. We want these to grace both corporate and private collections, and we look forward to the longevity of this product range.

MAPPP- SETA pilot skills training and learnerships

Umcebo has formed a partnership with MAPPP-SETA and Department of Arts and Culture, and implemented and delivered  craft-production skills training for special needs learners. The skills training was funded by the National Skills Fund, Department of Labour and MAPPP-SETA jointly. They have also worked with Arts Administration learnership candidates, and hosted them as part of a learnership.

Umcebo aims, through this project, to formalise the informal learning and skills transferral that take place through involvement in the creative workshops. Participation in the skills training and learnerships, allows learners and trainers to partake in other more advanced learnerships, learning programmes and / or pursue formal employment in a post-workshop environment.
