Escape to the Island
Matthew Jackson

At Big City Life, we're all about the extraordinary, the amazing and the fantastic. If it's happening in the city we're bound to get you the low-down, whether it's sumptuous food, cutting-edge design or the latest in lifestyle trends, you'll be sure to hear about it from us first.

Occasionally we like to cast our nets a little further afield in search of the truly unique – to break from the city and herald news of the magnificent.

Recently we stumbled across something out of this world. Something that screams amazing from the very hilltops and has instant “I want” appeal. It's as memorable as your first day of school and more enchanting than your first lover.

So, what exactly are we going on about? What's got us screaming for more? Demanding access and raving like lunatics? Simply put: the finest holiday destination on the African continent – Masasa lodge.

Masasa Lodge, built in the shade of its namesake – a giant Masasa tree, is secreted away on Dugong Island, on the Bazaruto Archipelago, just off the Mozambican town of Vilanculos. Surrounded by a calm turquoise sea and littered with indigenous trees, Dugong Island is the original island paradise.

Drawing upon Swahili and East African design influences, Masasa Loge conjures up images of the Swiss Family Robinson with its low hanging thatch and breathtaking costal views. But that’s just about where the comparison ends. Where our intrepid island adventurers were faced with pirates, creepy crawlies and adversaries of the general persuasion, visitors to Masasa lodge are treated to nothing less than premier luxury.

Embracing passive design principles, the lodge has been built in congruent harmony to the surrounding landscape.

The Architects and developers of this truly remarkable destination have taken the utmost care to ensure that the lodge provides all of life’s creature comforts while employing green technologies to minimise the lodge’s impact on the surrounding environment. This little feature alone makes the lodge outstanding in our books.

With six fully furnished bedrooms all with on suit bathrooms reminiscent of the Zimbabwe ruins, and a design which encourages the natural flow of air, Masasa Lodge provides its visitors with unrivalled comfort throughout the year. The lodge has been built to afford each visitor with absolute privacy and every room has its own special character and unique view.

So, aside from the luxury, what do you do on an island paradise?
Well, Dugong Island is also a nature reserve and a birder’s paradise to boot. There are even plans afoot to reintroduce rhino to the island to re-establish the natural balance, so game viewing is always an option. If you’re more interested in the finned variety of animal there’s plenty of big game fishing to be had, as well as some of the finest snorkelling around.

If you absolutely have to get off of the island for a couple of days, then you won’t be disappointed by Simegeror, a fifty foot luxury catamaran which services the lodge.

No luxury has been spared on the yacht, which boasts onboard showers and ablutions and even has an ice machine as that must have necessity in the tropics.

Frankly, we have no idea why anyone would want to leave this gorgeous haven for anything other than a pleasure cruise. But, if you have a thirst for adventure, we can’t think of a better way to quench it than exploring the ocean blue.

Masasa Lodge is incredibly exclusive and is only available for fractional ownership. The good news however, is that there are twelve ownerships still available and the yacht is included in the ownership. Two more lodges are currently in the process of being built on the island.

If you have the money to spare, where better to invest than an island paradise?
